50 year Old Shepherd Recipes Venture into the kitchens of the past if you dare by trying these old fashioned recipes of a bygone generation of Shepherd homemakers.
VEGETABLE STEW by Mrs. E. E. Pate – 1961
3 lb. good beef, cut in 1”-2” squares 2 large onions, finely chopped
1 can cream style corn ˝ bottle catsup
1 can tomatoes 1 cup shortening or cooking oil
4 cups Irish potatoes, cut in 1” cubes salt, red and black pepper to taste
Brown beef. Place beef, tomatoes, corn, potatoes, onions, catsup, shortening, salt and pepper in large pot. Cover with water, about 1” – 2”. Cook according to toughness of meat (about 1 hour on low to medium heat).
For pressure cooker, follow above directions, using a little less water. Cook at 10 – 15 lb. pressure for 10 – 12 minutes.
For variety: add carrots, peas, celery, etc.
